THE FOLLOWING IS A REAL QUESTION SUBMITTED VIA THE “LORDLY ADVICE GENERATOR” ON THE CHESTERFIELD SOCIETY WEBSITE. ALTHOUGH NOT ALL QUESTIONS ARE SUITABLE FOR PUBLIC DISPLAY, LORD CHESTERFIELD PERSONALLY SELECTED THIS QUESTION TO POST AND ANSWER HERE ON THE CHESTERFIELD ADVISOR BLOG.
My father, like me, was also known as Philip Stanhope. Whereas I was the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, he was the 3rd Earl of Chesterfield and my grandfather before him was the 2nd Earl of Chesterfield.
Unfortunately, little was recorded, historically speaking, about my father’s legacy and I am not about to bore you with details of my upbringing.
My grandfather, on the other hand, was well known throughout the land as somewhat of a “ladies’ man” (that, according to Samuel Pepys, who imbibed with him and enjoyed the same title).
In fact, my dear old granddad (that’s him on the right) was the first serious romance of Ms. Barbara Villiers, who would become the most notorious of many mistresses of King Charles II of England. Grandpa Phil would eventually cast her aside in search of a more “noble” wife. The King also did not wed her, but apparently found something worth pursuing in her, because King Chuck went on to sire five children to the woman my grandfather once wooed!
